Ingredient Spotlight: Hemp Seed Oil

There’s no shortage of natural oils in skincare, and here at Advanced Clinicals, we’ve already discussed the benefits of many of them. Today we’re here to shed light on another can’t-miss oil making the rounds: Hemp Seed Oil. Before you dismiss this one as just like all the other oils out there, you may want to read on to learn more about Hemp Seed Oil’s unique benefits and why you should be looking for it in your skincare products!

Where Does Hemp Seed Oil Come From?

Hemp Seed Oil is derived from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, an herb indigenous to Eastern Asia that is now cultivated worldwide. Hemp Seed Oil is different from its more famous counterpart, CBD Oil, which is an extract of the cannabis plant itself and not the seeds. Hemp Seed Oil contains no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and little to no CBD. Hemp Seed Oil is a clear, green-tinted oil, and is often unrefined and cold-pressed to preserve its nutrients.

The medicinal qualities of Hemp Seed Oil have been used for centuries, dating back to Ancient Chinese civilizations who discovered that Hemp Seeds were high in protein, vitamins, and essential fatty and amino acids. After these powerful medicinal benefits were discovered, salves and tinctures made from Hemp Seed Oil were commonly used to treat rashes, irritation, and other skin ailments.

While there’s plenty of plant oils known for their medicinal uses that date back thousands of years, Hemp Seed Oil stands apart from the rest thanks to its high content of three important polyunsaturated fatty acids: linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid. Additionally, its ratio of omega-6 (linoleic acid) to omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids is 3:1—the ideal ratio for health benefits in humans!

How Is Hemp Seed Oil Beneficial to Our Skin?

Hemp Seed Oil makes an excellent moisturizer that can lock in hydration to strengthen and protect the skin’s natural barrier. It’s lightweight, easily absorbed, and can regulate oil production to help balance overly dry or overly oily skin. Its real claim to fame, however, is that it’s one of the best oils for acne-prone skin. Unlike the majority of oils, Hemp Seed Oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores and cause a buildup of oil, dirt, and other impurities that contribute to pimples, blackheads, and rough skin texture.

When applied topically, Hemp Seed Oil can moisturize the skin and calm inflammation and irritation from a wide variety of skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. Hemp Seed Oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a powerful anti-inflammatory fatty acid that also encourages skin cell renewal for fresher, healthier skin. This miracle oil can work wonders when applied to immediate irritation or dry patches of skin that are in need of some quick TLC.

You’ve most likely already reaped the benefits of Hemp Seed Oil in some of your skincare favorites without even realizing it. When formulated alongside other ingredients, Hemp Seed Oil lends its anti-inflammatory properties in a non-greasy, lightweight texture, and makes a welcome addition to many skincare products including toners, serums, and lotions. At Advanced Clinicals, we offer Hemp Seed Oil in several products for both the face and the body, so you have plenty of options to choose from!
