Meet the Women Behind the Formulas You Love

As a brand backed by science, have you ever wondered who the brains are behind your favorite Advanced Clinicals products? Well, allow us to introduce you to our team of talented WOMEN! You read that right, #ACBabe. Our formulas are all made by women for women, which is why you see the results that you do! And in an industry heavily dominated by men (did you know that just 30% of the world’s scientific researchers are women?) we are exceptionally proud to be breaking the mold. (Source: UNESCO)

So, in celebration of Women’s History Month, we sat down with the leading ladies of our Research & Development team to learn all about their #ACGlowGetter stories – How did they get their start in science? Who inspires them most? What makes each of them glow?

Take a peek into our laboratory and see how these trailblazing women make Advanced Clinicals the brand you know and love today.

Cheryl Jaglinski, R&D Lead Formulator

Why did you choose research and development as your career path?

My nineth grade physical chemistry teacher thought I’d be a good chemist since I was the only one in the class that could balance chemical equations.

What do you enjoy most about product development?

I enjoy knowing that I make people feel good about themselves by using the products that I create.

Do you have a favorite Advanced Clinicals product you helped develop (or use)? If so, which?

I really like our creams and lotions! Right now, I’m using the Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Cream.

What makes you glow?

Being happy (and maybe a little lotion with diamond bright shimmer when I feel like it)!

How do you celebrate Women’s History Month?

I light a candle in honor of those pioneers that brought us to the forefront in science, and in development.

Lis Torres, R&D Technician

Why did you choose research and development as your career path?

I had a great chemist teacher in high school. I remember every year we had a science fair and I always went to her for help. My junior year, I asked her for ideas on what to do and she suggested I do my project on color changing fire. At first, I was surprised she suggested that but part of me was excited. She loved science, and if it were up to her, she probably would have let us do crazy experiments in school. She was great! Always made science so exciting and fun to learn.

What do you enjoy most about product development?

What I enjoy the most about product development is batching the products. I love learning and seeing the process that it takes to make the different products. It is something I love to see when it all comes together.

Do you have a favorite Advanced Clinicals product you helped develop (or use)? If so, which?

My favorite AC product to use is the Tea Tree + Witch Hazel Toner. I have terrible skin – I get blemishes and it becomes very dry. The Tea Tree really helps with targeting blemishes and the mist works perfect – I feel so fresh and hydrated once I use it!

What makes you glow?

What makes me glow is keeping a positive attitude. I always like to say it is not fun to drain yourself with always being in a bad mood. The saying, “it’s a bad day, not a bad life” is true and I feel like keeping that in mind is key. I also remind myself that in addition to staying physically healthy, we must stay mentally healthy.

How do you celebrate Women’s History Month?

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I reflect on how proud I am to be a woman and take this time to remember and recognize the incredible women I’ve been blessed to be around. From having a mother who came here with just her siblings and not knowing English, to working in a lab of all women, it’s incredible to know that we all came from different backgrounds and have come this far. Whether you’re a woman in the workforce, a stay-at-home mom, or just trying your best to figure it all out, we should be proud of where we are and look ahead to what more we still can do in the future.

Sandra Salazar, R&D Senior Chemist

Why did you choose research and development as your career path?

I worked as an Assistant for the Lead Chemist for over 20 years. Throughout that time, I enjoyed assisting especially when it came to batching. It was so interesting to see the formulations come together, such as adding water to waxes to create a lotion or cream or mixing water with gum to create a gel or a serum. I learned the beauty of combining and exploring ingredients in a formulation, as an assistant. That made me want to continue working in the cosmetic personal care and industrial field.

There have been so many amazing women who have inspired me. In the past, I have had the pleasure of working alongside Cinda Carlson, who used to be a chemist, and is now our Manager for the Quality Systems & Regulatory department, as well as Manette L. Epright. Talented, smart women like these were an inspiration to me, and I knew one day I would be like them.

What do you enjoy most about product development?

I enjoy everything about product development from researching, formulating and batching, to paperwork and testing products and their stability. Understanding how materials behave and interact, to provide enhanced properties, improved processing, and delivery of an active ingredient in a convenient and useable form, interests me.

Do you have a favorite Advanced Clinicals product you helped develop (or use)? If so, which?

There are so many that I have helped develop throughout the years that it’s hard for me to choose just one – all of the Advanced Clinicals products are wonderful. I use a variety of the hair masks, face masks and mists, and I also love the Bulgarian Rose Cream, and cleanse my face with the Micro-Peel Cleanser.

What makes you glow?

Walking into the lab every morning and developing a new product!

How do you celebrate Women’s History month?

I celebrate Women’s History Month with my daughter Alexis. I like to promote community and show her all the great things that strong and independent women can do in life and be her inspiration.

Vanessa Oblaza, Product Development Lab Manager

Why did you choose research and development as your career path?

I’ve always had an interest in science growing up. Science fairs were my jam, and just had an extreme curiosity for the why and how things work. I also loved making potions in the bathroom sink (which my grandma was not as crazy about when I was younger).

Bill Nye is the one who got me excited and really into science. However, it was my grandma who taught me that as a woman, I will need strength and perseverance to thrive. My sister encouraged me to keep going during the most difficult times in college and life in general, and my mom’s hard work ethic reminds me every day to give it my all. Without them, I wouldn’t have found my place in this amazing field.

What do you enjoy most about product development?

I love testing out new ingredients and finding a place for them in our products. The industry for ingredients keeps growing, and I love learning about new innovations and trying them out.

Do you have a favorite Advanced Clinicals product you helped develop (or use)? If so, which?

Does picking the fragrance count!? The Keratin Hair Mask was the first Advanced Clinicals product that I helped choose the fragrance for and assist with the launch. In terms of my favorite product that I use and love (besides the hair masks since I love them all), would be the new Collagen Face Cream. It is so moisturizing, and my skin just soaks it up. I also love the 10% Glycolic Serum, the Micro-Peel Cleanser and the Cica Serum. When my friends ask which ones to use for a clear complexion, I always recommend those – especially now for maskne.

What makes you glow?

Drinking lots of water and tea (mostly green tea). I notice a HUGE difference in my skin when I don’t drink enough water. I also like to alternate my nighttime regimen with a Retinol or Glycolic Serum, followed by a nice face oil to seal it in. I let the oil absorb a bit before bed, and by the morning my skin is very plump and has a dewy glow.

How do you celebrate Women’s History month?

I’m first generation Polish American and in Poland, Dzień Kobiet (International Women’s Day), is a big deal and is celebrated with giving and receiving flowers. Growing up, my grandma and mom would always give us flowers, and my aunt and cousins in Poland would call us to wish us strength and fortune. Today, I try to create the same kind of tradition with my nieces. I bring them flowers and we have a little Girl Power moment. Just a fun way to remember and celebrate the amazing strong women in our family.

Zoe Weisman, Managing Director of Product Development

Why did you choose research and development as your career path?

I actually started off as a copywriter for the laboratory. I didn’t have any formal training…they just handed me formulas and had me write out the benefits. I LOVED the challenge of decoding the ingredient names. I read every single study I could get my hands on and became obsessed with the science of skin care. I would stay up late reading research papers and would wake up in the morning under a pile of studies. I started giving the lab unsolicited advice on which ingredients they should use, which slowly became solicited, and over the years I became instrumental in the creation of all the Advanced Clinicals products. The most fascinating part for me was learning over time which ingredients looked good on paper, and which ones looked good on skin.

I am inspired every single day by the genius women in our lab. Sandra Salazar, Cheryl Jaglinski, Vanessa Oblaza and Lis Torres are the smartest, most hard working, creative women I’ve met in our industry! I am so proud to have them on my team.

What do you enjoy most about product development?

I still love reading studies. I just love learning the science behind WHY ingredients work. Skin science is so much fun.

What makes you glow?

Sunshine (with SPF of course!), my 4-year-old son’s uncontrollable belly laughs, getting dirt under my nails in the garden, and making products people love.

How do you celebrate Women’s History month?

I celebrate womxn every day of the year. It shouldn’t be limited to one month! I honor the womxn who fought for equal rights years ago and continue to fight every day. This month, I am thinking of my grandmother a lot. I like to think she would be proud of me. 😊
