Why You Should Change Your Skin Care For Fall

The leaves are turning and the weather is getting cooler, and when the season changes, so too should our skincare routine if we want to bring out our best complexion. During the cooler months, it's common to choose moisturizing creams and gentle cleansers over lightweight lotions and purifying face washes that are better suited for the summer when heat and humidity are at their worst. While the weather isn’t quite as harsh as it will be when winter comes, it’s not too soon to start thinking about how the change in seasons is going to affect our skin and what we can do to get ahead of the game. By switching up some of your Advanced Clinicals favorites, you can make the most out of the change in seasons by initiating a change in your skin as well!

Cleansers

During the summer, many of us are likely using a foaming or purifying cleanser that can break up the excess sweat, buildup, and oil that easily accumulate when it’s hot and humid. These types of cleansers are great for oily skin and the summertime, but in the fall, your skin will benefit from using a more gentle face wash as your skin is less likely to have as much buildup at the end of the day.

Tea Tree Cleanser

Our sulfate-free Tea Tree Face Cleanser is perfect for the fall. It thoroughly washes away makeup, oil, and other impurities without stripping the skin leaving it feeling dry and tight. It’s also formulated with Tea Tree Oil, a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory that helps soothe irritated skin and fight acne-causing bacteria. Lastly, Vitamin E and Willow Bark help balance and decongest the skin for a rejuvenated complexion.

Serums

The fall is a great time to begin using chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs. Chemical exfoliants are excellent for fighting everything from breakouts to alleviating hyperpigmentation and signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. AHAs and BHAs help resurface the skin by increasing cell turnover and sloughing off the dead outer layer of the skin, in turn allowing the fresh, healthy skin cells underneath to take their place. The caveat, however, is that while they’re powerful, they can also cause irritation and leave the skin more susceptible to sun damage.

While you may think it’s best to avoid such strong ingredients during cooler months when dry skin and irritation are more frequent, it can actually be better to incorporate AHAs and BHAs into your fall skincare routine for this very reason. Unlike the summer when we want to be outside basking in the sun, in the fall, most of us would rather be cozied up inside. For our skin, this means less exposure to the sun and other stressors that cause irritation and inflammation, making fall the perfect time to start using these hard-hitting ingredients.

10% Glycolic Acid Serum

When it comes to a serum with AHAs and BHAs, our 10% Glycolic Acid Serum is a no-brainer when you want to diminish the look of uneven texture and tone while supporting healthy skin cell renewal. It’s formulated with a blend of Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic, and Phytic Acids that dissolve dead skin cells to reveal a glowing, radiant complexion. To top it all off, it has antioxidants Blueberry and Apple extracts that soothe irritation and soften the skin.

If you’re worried about jumping right into a serum and would rather dip your toes in first, our Glycolic Toner is a good choice for more sensitive skin types who want a boost of skin renewal without causing irritation. In addition to Glycolic Acid, this hydrating skin toner is also formulated with Watermelon, Apple, and Cucumber extracts to revitalize and refresh your complexion during the colder months.

One more thing - it’s common to experience redness, dryness, and irritation while using AHAs and BHAs, so don’t be afraid to start slow! Start incorporating any products containing AHAs and BHAs once or twice a week, and move up from there as your skin acclimates and can tolerate daily use.

Toners and Mists

Incorporating heavier moisturizers and creams is a great way to fight winter skin woes, but packing in hydration only goes so far in fighting dry and flaky skin. It’s equally important to focus on products that can soothe as well, and another way to ensure you’re protecting your skin is to look for calming ingredients to help reduce irritation and inflammation.

Hyaluronic + Aloe Facial Mist

A spritz of our Hyaluronic + Aloe Facial Mist before your moisturizer is a great way to sneak in some aloe vera, a powerful humectant known for its skin-soothing properties. Aloe vera is a wonderful ingredient for several reasons: it helps retain moisture, plumps the skin, and best of all - it can calm irritation caused by skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Collagen + Rosewater Facial Mist

For those who have particularly dry and lackluster skin, our Collagen + Rosewater Facial Mist helps restore bounce to your skin while increasing moisture retention. Collagen is one of the building blocks of healthy skin and what gives us that plump, dewy finish associated with a youthful complexion. And that’s not all - this hydrating spray is also formulated with Watermelon and Peptides that rejuvenate and facilitate the skin’s natural cell renewal process.

Moisturizers

When we think of changing our skincare with the onset of cooler weather, the most obvious change that comes to mind is switching our face lotion to something a little heavier such as a cream. For oily skin types and those concerned with weighing the skin down, you can use a heavier moisturizer at night and a lighter one during the day. Our skin does most of its regeneration and repair at night anyways, which means the most ideal time to use a heavier moisturizer is before bed to “tuck” everything - including your skin!

Plant-Based Collagen Cream

For the most part, a good fall moisturizer is going to be a cream or lotion that’s a little thicker than what you’d normally use in the summer. Our Plant-Based Collagen Face Cream is formulated with 2% Marula Oil for ultimate hydration and a dose of amino and fatty acids. Marula Oil can soften and nourish dry, irritated skin while alleviating signs of aging by plumping up fine lines and wrinkles for a radiant and hydrated complexion.

Hyaluronic Gel Face Cream

Our Hyaluronic Gel Face Cream makes the perfect daytime moisturizer for all skin types, including those with extra dry skin. It’s specially formulated with Hyaluronic Acid that leaves the skin hydrated and dewy throughout the day without weighing it down with heavy oils. It also has Vitamin B12, which not only calms dry, inflamed skin but can alleviate dark spots and uneven skin tone to give you a radiant, glowing complexion.

Last but not least….

Do not skip out on wearing sunscreen! Just because most of us don’t go outside as much as we do in the summer doesn’t mean we aren’t still exposed to sun damage. Likewise, just because it’s not as hot out doesn’t mean that the sun has stopped shining - you’re just as prone to sun damage whether it’s 100 degrees outside or -100!
